A karat (K) measures gold purity out of 24 parts. Pure gold = 24K. The alloy metals mixed with gold add hardness, durability, and colour variation. The higher the karat, the purer — and more expensive — the gold.

Why Mix Metals?

Pure 24K gold is too soft for jewellery. Alloy metals like silver, copper, and zinc increase hardness, alter colour, and reduce cost — making functional jewellery possible.

02

Karat vs Carat

Karat (K) measures gold purity. Carat (ct) measures gemstone weight. A common confusion: 24K means pure gold, while 1 carat = 0.2 grams for diamonds and gems.

03

Fineness System

The fineness system expresses purity in parts per 1000. 916 fineness = 91.6% gold = 22K. BIS hallmarks use fineness numbers stamped on certified jewellery.

04

Buying Tip

For Indian weddings: 22K is the standard. For diamond jewellery: 18K. For investment: 24K coins/bars or Sovereign Gold Bonds for tax efficiency.

Pure Gold
99.9%

24 Karat — The Purest Form

24K gold contains 99.9% pure gold with virtually no other metals. It has a distinctly bright, vivid deep-yellow colour. Naturally very soft and malleable, it is unsuitable for most jewellery but ideal for investment, electronics, and industry.

In India, 24K is primarily sold as coins, bars, and bullion for investment. It's used in electronics for its superior electrical conductivity, and in medical devices for its biocompatibility.

22 Karat — Most Popular in India

22K gold contains 91.6% gold and 8.4% alloy metals (typically silver, copper, and zinc). The alloy provides the hardness needed for intricate jewellery designs while maintaining a rich, warm golden colour. This is the most widely sold karat grade in India.

BIS hallmarked jewellery in India is predominantly 22K, stamped with the fineness 916. The perfect balance of purity and workability makes it ideal for traditional Indian jewellery forms.

18 Karat — Designer Favourite

18K gold contains 75% gold and 25% alloy metals. The higher alloy content makes it harder and more durable than 22K, ideal for diamond and gemstone-studded jewellery that requires precise settings and high wear resistance.

Available in yellow, white, and rose gold variants. White gold (18K) is created by alloying gold with palladium or nickel. Rose gold uses a higher copper proportion for its warm pink hue. Preferred by luxury international and designer brands.

14 Karat — Durable Fashion Choice

14K contains 58.5% gold. Very hard and scratch-resistant — excellent for daily-wear jewellery. The paler yellow tone compared to 22K suits contemporary minimalist and western jewellery styles.

Popular in Western and export markets. The increased alloy proportion dramatically increases durability, making it ideal for items that see regular daily wear and exposure to elements.

10 Karat — Most Affordable Gold

10K contains 41.7% gold — the legal minimum karat that can be sold as gold in many countries. Very hard, durable, and the most affordable genuine gold option. Noticeably paler in colour, often appearing more silver-toned than golden.

Not common in India but widely sold in the USA, Canada, and export markets for budget-friendly jewellery. Also used for kids' jewellery due to its durability and lower price point.

Budget JewelleryKids Jewellery Export MarketsIndustrial Use

Yellow Gold

The natural colour of gold. The rich, warm yellow hue comes from the pure gold content. Timeless and hypoallergenic at higher karats. The higher the karat, the richer and deeper the yellow tone. Richest at 24K, more muted at 14K.

  • Best for: Traditional Indian jewellery, investment
  • Hypoallergenic: Yes (22K and above)
  • Maintenance: Low — natural look requires minimal upkeep

White Gold

Created by alloying gold with white metals like palladium, silver, or nickel, then rhodium-plated for a bright mirror finish. Common in 18K and 14K. Modern, sleek appearance. Requires re-plating every few years as rhodium wears.

  • Best for: Diamond settings, contemporary jewellery
  • Caution: May contain nickel — check for allergies
  • Maintenance: Medium — needs replating every 2–3 years

Rose Gold

The distinctive pink hue comes from a higher proportion of copper in the alloy. Romantic, on-trend, and very durable due to the copper content. Most common in 18K and 14K. Does not require rhodium plating. The more copper, the deeper the rose hue.

  • Best for: Modern fashion jewellery, wedding bands
  • Hypoallergenic: Generally yes, no rhodium needed
  • Maintenance: Low — very durable, scratch-resistant

Green Gold (Electrum)

Green gold, or electrum, is created by alloying gold with silver (and sometimes cadmium). Historically found naturally in ancient riverbeds. The silver content gives it a subtle green-yellow tint. Rare in modern jewellery but used in specialty art pieces.

  • Best for: Specialty art jewellery, collector pieces
  • Historical use: Ancient Egyptian and Greek civilizations

BC

Ancient Origins

Gold has been coveted by humanity for over 6,000 years. The earliest known gold jewellery dates to around 4000 BC in Eastern Europe. Egyptian pharaohs were buried with gold, believing it the "flesh of the gods." In ancient India, gold featured in Vedic rituals as early as 3000 BC.

Electrical Conductor

Gold's superior electrical conductivity (41 million S/m) and complete resistance to corrosion make it invaluable in electronics. Every smartphone contains about 0.03 grams of gold. NASA coats spacecraft visors with gold to reflect solar radiation.

India's Gold Story

India is the world's second-largest gold consumer, importing over 700–900 tonnes annually. Gold holds deep cultural significance — auspicious in weddings, festivals like Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras, and passed down through generations as family heirloom wealth.

🌍

Global Reserves

The USA holds the world's largest gold reserves at over 8,133 tonnes, stored primarily at Fort Knox. India's RBI holds over 800 tonnes. All the gold ever mined in human history would fit in a cube of roughly 21 meters per side — surprisingly little for such an influential metal.

⚗️

Alchemist's Dream

Medieval alchemists obsessively sought to transmute base metals into gold via the Philosopher's Stone. While they failed, their experiments laid the foundation for modern chemistry. Gold can only be created in supernovae and neutron star collisions — it literally comes from dying stars.

📈

Modern Gold Standard

Until 1971, the US dollar was pegged to gold at $35/ounce (Bretton Woods system). President Nixon ended this, leading to floating currencies and free gold markets. Today, gold trades 24/7 globally on exchanges in London, New York, Shanghai, and Mumbai.

BIS

What is BIS Hallmarking?

Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking is India's official gold quality certification system. It guarantees tested and certified purity at a BIS-recognised Assay and Hallmarking Centre. Mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India since June 2021.

  • Official government-backed certification
  • Mandatory since June 16, 2021
  • Only BIS-licensed jewellers can sell hallmarked gold
  • Covers 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K, 24K grades

Why Gold Doesn't Rust

Gold is a "noble metal" — it doesn't react with oxygen, water, or most acids. This remarkable chemical inertness is why ancient gold coins look perfect today after thousands of years underground. Gold only dissolves in aqua regia (nitric + hydrochloric acid).

Malleability

Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. A single ounce (28g) of gold can be beaten into a sheet covering 9 square metres, thinner than 0.00001cm. It can also be drawn into a wire 80km long from just 1 gram.

🌟

Born in Stars

Gold cannot be created on Earth. It was formed during catastrophic neutron star collisions (kilonovae) billions of years ago. The gold in your jewellery was forged in dying stars and arrived on Earth via meteorite impacts during our planet's formation.

Conductor

Gold has excellent electrical conductivity (about 71% of copper's) but unlike copper, it never corrodes or tarnishes. This makes it the preferred metal for critical electronic connections — every computer chip uses gold for its finest connections.

💊

Medical Gold

Gold is biocompatible — the human body accepts it without reaction. Gold nanoparticles are used in cancer treatments (photothermal therapy). Gold compounds treat rheumatoid arthritis. Dental gold alloys have been used for over 4,000 years.

🔬

Isotopes

Gold has 37 known isotopes, but only one stable isotope: Au-197. Gold-198 is a radioactive isotope used in medical imaging and cancer treatment. Pure gold is the only metal that is naturally monoisotopic in nature.

Method 01 · Traditional · India

Coal Bhatti — Fire Assay

The Coal Bhatti (fire assay) is one of the oldest and most respected gold testing methods, still practised by experienced Indian goldsmiths. It involves heating a gold sample in a small coal-fired furnace to observe behaviour under extreme heat.

Process:

  • Small sample taken and placed in a clay cupel (bone ash cup)
  • Cupel placed inside furnace with burning charcoal at 1000°C+
  • Base metals (copper, zinc, lead) oxidise and absorb into the cupel walls
  • Pure gold remains as a bead at the bottom — gold never oxidises
  • The bead is weighed and compared to original weight to calculate purity

Limitations: Destructive (sample consumed), requires skilled hands, slow process. Not suitable for large-scale industrial testing.

Method 02 · Classic · Non-Destructive

Touchstone Testing — Streak Method

A non-destructive visual comparison method used for quick on-the-spot purity estimation. Widely used by Indian jewellers for field checks before sending for detailed testing.

Process:

  • Gold sample rubbed firmly on black basalt or lydite stone
  • Reference needles of known karat (10K–24K) also streaked alongside
  • Acid solutions of matching strength applied to each streak
  • Streak dissolving faster = lower purity; slower = higher purity
  • Goldsmith matches reaction to identify approximate karat

Accuracy: ±2–5% — best for quick screening, not for certified testing. An experienced goldsmith can be surprisingly accurate with this method.

Method 03 · Chemical · Workshop Standard

Acid Testing — Chemical Reaction

Uses nitric acid (and sometimes aqua regia) to determine gold purity through chemical reaction. One of the most widely used methods across India for workshop-level testing.

Process:

  • Small scratch or surface scraping collected using testing file
  • Nitric acid applied directly — pure gold shows no reaction
  • Base metals dissolve: green = copper/zinc, milky = silver content
  • Different acid strengths calibrated for specific karat ranges
  • Aqua regia (1:3 nitric + hydrochloric) used for quantitative analysis

Safety Note: Nitric acid is highly corrosive. Gloves and eye protection mandatory. Use in ventilated area only. Fumes are toxic — never inhale.

Accuracy: ±1–2% — reliable for 22K vs 18K differentiation.

Method 04 · Modern · Most Accurate · Industry Standard

XRF Machine — X-Ray Fluorescence

The gold standard of modern testing. Non-destructive, instant, and extraordinarily accurate. XRF machines are used by BIS labs, banks, refiners, and professional bullion dealers worldwide.

How it works:

  • Item placed in or pointed at XRF analyser — zero sample damage
  • Machine emits X-rays that excite atoms within the gold alloy
  • Each element emits characteristic fluorescent X-rays at specific energy levels
  • Detector reads these emissions and calculates exact percentage of every element
  • Full elemental analysis: Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, Pt, Pd, Ni and more
  • Results displayed in under 30 seconds on digital screen

Advantages: Non-destructive, ±0.05% accuracy, instant results, no chemicals, detects gold plating vs solid gold, identifies all alloy metals simultaneously.

Limitation: Only analyses surface (few microns). XRF cannot penetrate deep, so gold-plated items can sometimes mislead it. Fire assay remains the ultimate purity reference for certification.

Step 01

Collection & Sorting

Raw gold materials gathered: old jewellery, scrap, dental gold, electronic components, or gold ore concentrate. Items sorted by approximate purity using touchstone or XRF screening. Similar grades grouped together for efficient batch processing.

Step 02

Melting & Sampling

Sorted gold melted in graphite crucible inside a high-temperature electric or gas furnace at approximately 1100°C. Once fully liquid, a small sample is withdrawn for fire assay to determine baseline composition and calculate required processing steps.

Step 03

Chlorination — Miller Process

Chlorine gas bubbled through the molten alloy. Chlorine reacts preferentially with base metals (silver, copper, zinc, lead), forming metal chlorides that float as slag on the surface. Gold does not react with chlorine and remains in the molten state below. Slag skimmed off. Result: approximately 99.5% pure gold. Silver chloride recovered separately for silver refining.

Step 04

Electrolytic Refining — Wohlwill Process

For 99.99% (4N) investment-grade gold, the Wohlwill Process follows Miller refining. The pre-refined gold acts as an anode suspended in gold chloride + hydrochloric acid electrolyte. Electric current causes pure gold to deposit on the cathode (thin gold strip) while impurities remain in solution or settle as anode slime. Takes 24–48 hours. Produces gold of 99.99% purity or better. The deposited gold is stripped, melted, and cast.

Step 05

Assaying & Certification

Refined gold retested via fire assay and XRF to confirm purity. Samples submitted to BIS-recognised assay offices or certified independent labs for official purity certificates. Final purity and weight precisely recorded. Gold stamped or hallmarked with purity mark, assay centre mark, and certification details.

Step 06

Casting & Delivery

Certified refined gold melted once more and cast into standard commercial forms: bars (1g, 5g, 10g, 50g, 100g, 1kg), granules, or wire. Each piece stamped with purity mark (999 or 9999), refinery mark, weight, and unique serial number for full traceability. Gold is now ready for investment markets, banking systems, mint, or jewellery manufacturers.
